Smart travel hacks: Why chewing gum, protein snacks, and sleep essentials are must-haves for every traveller’s carry-on |

Not only is packing for flying stressful, but it’s also complicated when one needs to balance the essentials within that limited carry-on. Every seasoned traveller knows that a handful of well-chosen items can make all the difference between a frustrating journey and a comfortable, smooth flight. Lee Thompson, the co-founder of the travel company Flash Pack and an accomplished photojournalist with over 100 countries under his belt, shares his experiences. His tips range from practical, sleep-enhancing items to strategies for minimalist packing; these will help travelers stay organised, comfortable, and ready for anything during their flight.

Essential travel snacks and chewing gum for comfortable long flights

Lee Thompson stresses that chewing gum is one of those unexpectedly crucial things. It would alleviate ear pressure at take-off and landing, especially on very long flights. Chewing gum keeps your mouth feeling fresh, too, after hours confined inside an aircraft cabin. In addition to gum, he takes high-protein snacks, such as dried fruit, nuts, or cereal bars. Sometimes airline meals are inadequate or unappetizing, especially on budget airlines. Having your own snacks keeps you energized and satisfied. These small additions fill the gaps between meals, keep your stamina up during long layovers, and can ward off the need for expensive airport food.

Minimalist packing, sleep essentials, and smart organisation for stress-free travel

Thompson stresses the importance of travelling light. Extra clothing, unnecessary toiletries, and expensive jewellery all add weight and clutter, making carry-ons cumbersome and increasing stress. Keeping only what is absolutely necessary makes movement through airports easier and less likely to result in lost or misplaced items. It’s not only the reduction of burdens that a minimalist approach offers but also a calmer, more focused travel experience.Long flights can disrupt normal sleep patterns, so sleep aids are a must. Thompson suggests a sturdy neck pillow, eye mask, earplugs, and a small handheld fan to create a comfortable micro-environment. Adding a lavender-scented sachet or sleep spray provides more relaxation and helps travellers rest better and alight fresher. Also, strategic organisation will save you time and alleviate stress. Passports, boarding passes, and other critical documents should be kept in one passport holder, so that it’s easy to grab when required. A little purse with native currency (including coins) serves in place of impulse and immediate purchases. Of course, pens and paper, headphones, and a portable charger are handy on long flights, while avoiding too many gadgets simplifies your carry-on luggage. Air conditioning results in cabin chill, battled by layered clothing: a hoodie, thick socks, or chunky knit.

Pack smart and travel prepared with essential items for a smoother journey

Pack smart, travel prepared. Paying attention to a few versatile essentials will greatly improve the journey for travellers. From chewing gum and protein snacks to sleep aids to strategic organisation, these items make air travel smoother, more comfortable, and less stressful. Minimalism, preparation, and thoughtful packing are the keys to a successful, enjoyable trip.
