Johnny Depp returns to Hollywood with dark new Christmas movie

Johnny Depp has officially stepped back into the Hollywood spotlight with a major studio comeback.

The actor took on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in Paramount’s upcoming dark retelling of A Christmas Carol, directed by Ti West.

The film, titled Ebenezer A Christmas Carol, was written by Nathaniel Halpern and promised a more psychological and eerie version of the classic Charles Dickens story.

Andrea Riseborough joined the cast, while Emma Watts produced the project with Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman as executive producers.

For Depp, this project marked his first major studio role since Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018.

After his departure from that franchise, the actor made a quiet return through smaller films such as Minamata and Jeanne du Barry.

This time, however, the comeback looked much bigger, signaling a possible new chapter in his career.

Paramount planned to release the film on November 13, 2026, just ahead of the holiday season.

The studio expected the film to be a major Christmas release with a darker emotional tone than usual adaptations.

The story of Ebenezer Scrooge have been told many times before by actors like Alastair Sim, Bill Murray, Michael Caine, and Jim Carrey.

But with Ti West’s gothic direction and Depp’s reputation for mysterious and complex characters, this version was expected to carry a haunting charm.

Fans already began calling it Johnny’s most intriguing role in years, as the actor prepared to bring a chilling new twist to a timeless Christmas story.
