Guillermo del Toro says he poured soul into ‘Frankenstein’ after decades

Guillermo del Toro said his long awaited Frankenstein film was one of the most personal projects of his life.

Speaking after its premiere at the London Film Festival, the 61 year old filmmaker shared that large parts of the story reflected his own emotions and experiences.

He explained that Mary Shelley’s original novel always felt deeply personal to him and described it as an autobiography of her soul.

Del Toro said her book have been like a Bible for him since his early career, shaping the way he viewed monsters and humanity.

The Oscar winning director has been trying to bring Frankenstein to life for almost twenty years.

However, his dream finally became real with the help of Netflix.

The film featured Jacob Elordi as the Creature and Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, with Del Toro adding his familiar gothic atmosphere and emotional depth.

He said the novel’s ideas about loneliness and belonging spoke to his own creative journey.

The star also pointed out that Mary Shelley’s difficult relationship with her father inspired the story’s central conflict between creator and creation.

Jacob praised Del Toro for giving the film such emotional truth, as he said he understood Mary Shelley through Del Toro and saw the Creature as an extension of the director’s own feelings.

The film drew attention for its beauty and heart, reminding audiences why Del Toro remains one of cinema’s most passionate storytellers.
